As the home of the Beer Revolution and tasting room for South African beer, we are proud to host the first ever South African National Beer Trophy – SANBT 2017 – Beerhouse People’s Choice Awards.
The Award ceremony will be held on Wednesday the 30th of August at Beerhouse on Long. The Beerhouse People’s Choice Awards are to be voted in store at Long Street, Fourways and Centurion. You can also vote online, HERE, for the beer you believe to be South Africa’s Best. By voting you stand a chance to win a R999 Beerhouse Voucher.
Beerhouse is passionate about providing a podium for local breweries to shine on. We also aim to bridge the gap between the brewer and beer consumer; the Beerhouse People’s Choice Awards enable us to to that. Beers that are entered into the SANBT are blind tasted and rated by certified beer judges according to BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) guidelines. This year, we are excited to hear what the people have to say. Beerhouse introduces the People’s Choice award by opening up the voting to the public and puts the power in the consumer’s hand and cultivates a true beerocracy.
SANBT was launched in 2015, with the aim to offer a fair, independent and reliable assessment of the burgeoning local beer scene, and to provide the best emerging brewers with the recognition they deserve. Over the last two years, brewer participation in the competition has grown substantially. In 2015, 56 South African beers were entered into the competition; 95 in 2016 and a whooping 199 in 2017 with gold and silver medals to be awarded.

Welcome to the Brew Food Revolution. Beerhouse has been championing the Beer Revolution in South Africa for years and now it’s time to introduce the country to a new food movement. Beerhouse’s library of beers has created a unique experience of exploration and discovery. Now this new era of exploration brings in a fusion of food and beer. Beerhouse has teamed up with Ultimate Braai Master Winner Piet Marais and his team to create a food menu that combines the best of both worlds.
Beerhouse launches its new Brew Food menu in August and will integrate smoking techniques from in-house custom made natural hard wood smokers.The awesome flavours of smoked meat are punctuated by Brew Food elements including beer fermented sriracha, beer cheese emulsions, brew pickles, beer fermented batter, fermented cabbage slaw, beer brine and amsai ranch sauce. All these elements either use beer in the ingredients or use fermentation and pickling to create flavours that complement smoked meats.
Expect smoked brisket, chicken wings, ribs and pulled pork, fish tacos, beer inspired nachos and beer cheese filled chilli poppers with the unique experience of inhouse made from scratch brew food elements that integrate complementary beer flavour profiles and utilizes the ancient techniques of pickling and fermentation.
Beerhouse is at the forefront of the culinary movement that is Beer Food. Beer is essentially a food item as the process to make it incorporates culinary skill and an in depth understanding of how flavour and layers of flavours integrate to make a balanced product.
Brewing and the culinary disciplines are technically similar in many ways. Brewing methods such as mashing in to create a wort, soaking the grain in hot water to draw flavour, colour and fermentable sugar, resembles stock creation in sauce preparation. Our Brew-BQ sauce uses beer to extract flavours from spices and vegetables.
Brewers then boil the wort, while chefs will use simmering or rolling boil to amalgamate or extract flavours. Hop additions are known to be the seasoning of the brewing while cooks will use seasoning to accentuate and balance the flavour in food. Brew food uses a custom seasoning and all food elements are seasoned in stages through brining, dry rubs and sauces.
Beer is fermented by yeast to create CO2, alcohol and various other flavour profiles. Brew food uses this magical art in creating beer fermented chillies and garlic to create our own beer- sriracha.
Ancient civilisations strove to preserve food for storage. Ancient techniques of fermenting and pickling allowed for longevity and a reduction of spoilage and therefore food security.
We are reviving both these ancient methods in our Brew Food Menu concept and bring it into the contemporary culinary world.

Brew Food Elements:
Amasi-Ranch: Traditional South African fermented milk & house-made mayonnaise sauce with chives.
Rémoulade: Brew-pickles & beeracha relish.
Brew-BQ Sauce: Beer based braai sauce incorporating the 5 senses of taste.
Beer-Cheese: A pure emulsion of beer & cheese, achieved using emulsifying salts.
Beeracha: Our take on the famous chilli sauce. Brine fermented chillies, beer, our special Beerhouse spice blend & garlic.
Beer Fermented Flatbread: Beer & flour kneaded and fermented for 24hrs before baking.
Brew-pickles: Beer brined vegetables.
Beerhouse Boerewors: Emulsified with the addition of beer.
Beer Batter: Beer, yeast & flour fermented 24hours before serving.
Beer Brioche: Brioche with some added beer for gees!
