BEERHOUSE reopens as Soup Kitchen

Support our #YelloFund to keep our Soup Kitchen going!

Since the start of the national lock-down in South African we were forced to close and lay-off all staff, as no restaurant is allowed to open or sell hot food. When and how we will be allowed to reopen with delivery operations or what the future for restaurants and bars holds remains to be seen, putting many people out of work and the hunger crisis growing. Beerhouse has taken the firm stance that we will not go down without a fight. We WILL open again to serve the thirsty the widest variety of beer under one roof again.

In the meantime, we simply cannot stand by while our communities and staff grow desperate and hungry.

Creating an operational Soup Kitchen

As of Tuesday, 21st April 2020, we have turned our kitchen into an operational soup kitchen. We are calling our staff in two at a time on a rotation to earn a daily cash wage and take some food home to feed their families.

The food that we are making is being donated to Ladles of Love. Every Monday and Thursday we are making between 400 – 600 liters of soup that gets picked up by The Hebron Project that distributes it in the Ocean View community near Kommetjie, Cape Town.

Thus far Beerhouse has partnered with Tygerberg Hills Lions club to help raise the starting funds to get this project off the ground.
A special thank you to all of our donors thus far:
Tygerberg Hills Lions – R3 000
Merriman Lions – R600 & 420L of frozen prepackaged meals
Sgt. Pepper – 5kg of springbok meat
Onomo Hotel – 100 pieces of chicken 1/4, veggies and fruit
Just Us Productions – R1 000
Food Lovers Market N1 City Value Center – 10% discounted on food we bought (value of R430 discount)

Private donors:
Elke Stanglow-Jorberg – R1 000
Helen Martin Clark – R1 000
Max Hutchinson – R5 000

As a result of these donations we are able to keep our kitchen operational for a week to produce a minimum of 100L (200 meals) of soup per day, but we want to be able to do more and longer!

How can you help?

There are two ways that you can support our kitchen:
1. Cash Donations
Donate via our #YellowFund on BackaBuddy, we will use this money to pay the staff who are working each day, support staff in need and other operational costs of running a soup kitchen (kitchen gas, petrol, cleaning products, etc)

2. Food Donations
Grains, vegetables, meat, spices, etc. These food donations can be dropped off at Beerhouse on Long, 219 Long Street, Cape Town CBD, Monday – Friday 8 am – 2pm. We will also accept any other donation that can be used in food parcels, hygiene parcels, etc.

3. Equipment Donations
20L – 50L containers to transport food from Beerhouse to Ladles of Love
50L – 100L cooking pots
Gloves & cleaning chemicals (also operational expenses)

You can email ops@beerhouse.co.za or call 083 503 5118 to find out more about how you can get involved.

We are very proud to announce that two of our managers have completed their UCT Restaurant Managers Diplomas via Get Smarter. Congratulations to Fanent Thabiso and Michael Cain who passed the course with flying colours. The short online course has equipped these already very capable managers with more tools to excel in their roles at Beerhouse. Michael has been with our Fourways venue for two years and has shown that he is an astute leader. Fanent was one of our original employees three years ago at Beerhouse on Long. He was one of the best waiters that we have ever had the privilege of working with. He showed great initiative and was a team player. He has developed into a great leader who is very well respected by the staff and his senior managers.

With great joy and pride we announce the promotion of two of our loyal and dedicated staff members. Janine “The Tappster” Van Wulven and Princess “Rare Spice”Mbonambi have stepped up to General Manager at On Long and Head Chef at Fourways respectively

Janine joined us in 2013 a mere months after opening our doors to our yellow house of beer on Long Street. She quickly proved herself as an astute and strong bartender who never shied away from doing heavy lifting or finding the perfect beer our beer lovers. Janine quickly rose through the ranks to Head Bartender and then Inventory manager were she excelled. She has been a very important part of making Beerhouse On Long the success it is today and has received a very well deserved promotion to General Manager. On Long is going to be awesome!!! Watch this space.

Princess joined us as a founding member of the Fourways kitchen staff having completed  a vigorous cook off under the beady eye of Executive Chef Roy “The Tasty One” Macaskill. She proved very quickly that she was more than just a great cook. She has shown incredible passion and determination to realize her ambition and is justly promoted to Head ChefHer journey is by no means finished and the sky is the limit.
