BEERHOUSE reopens as Soup Kitchen

Featured Post Image - BEERHOUSE reopens as Soup Kitchen

Since the start of the national lock-down in South Africa we were forced to close and lay-off all staff, as no restaurant is allowed to open or sell hot food. When and how we will be allowed to reopen with delivery operations or what the future for restaurants and bars holds remains to be seen, putting many people out of work and the hunger crisis growing. Beerhouse has taken the firm stance that we will not go down without a fight. We WILL open again to serve the thirsty the widest variety of beer under one roof again.

In the meantime, we simply cannot stand by while our communities and staff grow desperate and hungry.

Creating an operational Soup Kitchen

As of Tuesday, 21st April 2020, we have turned our kitchen into an operational soup kitchen. We are calling our staff in two at a time on a rotation to earn a daily cash wage and take some food home to feed their families.

The food that we are making is being donated to Ladles of Love. Every Monday and Thursday we are making between 400 – 600 liters of soup that gets picked up by The Hebron Project that distributes it in the Ocean View community near Kommetjie, Cape Town.

Thus far Beerhouse has partnered with Tygerberg Hills Lions club to help raise the starting funds to get this project off the ground.
A special thank you to all of our donors thus far:
Tygerberg Hills Lions – R3 000
Merriman Lions – R2 250 & 420L of frozen prepackaged meals
Sgt. Pepper – 5kg of springbok meat
Onomo Hotel – 100 pieces of chicken 1/4, veggies and fruit
Just Us Productions – R1 000
Food Lovers Market N1 City Value Center – 10% discounted on food we bought (value of R430 discount)
Pick ‘n Pay Plattekloof – a trolley full of non-perishable foods, pastas, pap and soup mixes.
De Grendel Lions – 4kg worth of pasta
Taxsave – R1 000

Private donors:
Elke Stanglow-Jorberg – R1 000
Helen Martin Clark – R1 000
Max Hutchinson – R5 000
Deon van Wulven – R1 000

As a result of these donations we are able to keep our kitchen operational for a week to produce a minimum of 100L (200 meals) of soup per day, but we want to be able to do more and longer!

How can you help?

There are two ways that you can support our kitchen:
1. Cash Donations
Donate via our #YellowFund on BackaBuddy, we will use this money to pay the staff who are working each day, support staff in need and other operational costs of running a soup kitchen (kitchen gas, petrol, cleaning products, etc)

2. Food Donations
Grains, vegetables, meat, spices, etc. These food donations can be dropped off at Beerhouse on Long, 219 Long Street, Cape Town CBD, Monday – Friday 8 am – 2pm. We will also accept any other donation that can be used in food parcels, hygiene parcels, etc.

3. Equipment Donations
20L – 50L containers to transport food from Beerhouse to Ladles of Love
50L – 100L cooking pots
Gloves & cleaning chemicals (also operational expenses)
Boiling tables – so that we can cook more food at the same time.
