Wandile Mbambeni: Friendly City Soul in the Mother City

So if you’ve been around the Cape Town city centre on any of the First Thursdays in the past couple of months, you may have been lucky enough to catch afro-soul sensation Wandile Mbambeni wooing the crowds at Beerhouse.

If not, you missed out. Swak.

Wandile hails from Port Elizabeth, where he was enrolled in the EP Kings rugby academy. Only he spent more time sitting on the couch playing guitar than tackling people, and after hearing him practice a few times it was his teammates who prodded him into becoming a performer. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind for the man from the Eastern Cape, but he’s riding it like a pro.

Wandile’s soulful mix of traditional Xhosa favourites and original folk and blues-inspired riffs has become an instant hit at Beerhouse, and we’re hoping to have him back regularly in the future. In the meantime, check out the Wandile Mbambeni Facebook Page for updates on the man and his guitar, and if he’s playing near you, get out and support a true South African talent.
