Beerhouse Centurion is born

The Beer Revolution is growing and Beerhouse is expanding to Centurion. Beerhouse opens its third site, after Cape Town Long Street and Johannesburg Fourways, in the neighbourhood of Centurion Pretoria in the space the legendary Firkin Pub occupied for 21 years. We will be opening our doors to our 30 taps, 99 bottles and hand crafted food from Friday the 25th of November after giving the old pub an exciting Beerhouse yellow makeover. The new Centurion site is part of company’s expansion plans to be South Africa’s go-to venue for beer choice, knowledge and experiences with 20 Beerhouse outlets nationwide by 2020.

Beerhouse Centurion

The Story

Beerhouse as a concept was forged in the inquiring and restless mind of Randolf Jorberg. Beerhouse’s ‘Head Dreamer’ teamed up with Murray Slater “Beer Whisperer” with the mission of providing an inclusive unique experience with a large curated library of beer. The whisperer and dreamer were joined by Roy MacAskill “The Tasty One” who better than anyone in the country understands beer and food. His kitchen’s hand crafted food from around the globe compliment our variety of beer. His talent for beer and food pairing is unrivalled and is driven by quality. On it’s drive to bring the world’s oldest and greatest beverage to all parts of South Africa Beerhouse is now expanding. Centurion is number three with 17 more houses of beer to come by 2020.

The Drinks

Its beverage offering is spearheaded by its 99 bottles of beer on the wall, 30 taps including local and international beers and non-beer offerings like gin & tonic, ice tea and cold brew coffee on tap. Intuitive navigational tools that reside in Beerhouse’s beautifully constructed menus empower guest with the ability to choose a beer for themselves based on their preferences. The beer list is complimented by a tight but inventive wine, spirits and soft offering. Beerhouse is committed to being a tasting room for the burgeoning beer industry supporting local micro-breweries and giving them a podium on which to shine.  Beerhouse Navigators are robustly trained on beer and how to navigate you through beer lands exciting landscape. Beerhouse are the instigators, propagators and curators of the Beer Revolution. Everyone leaves Beerhouse a beer lover.

The food

Hand crafted food from around the globe that takes into consideration traditional beer food and items that push the taste envelopes. A unique and interesting snack menu allows hungry  beer drinkers to indulge in a great variety of beer friendly fare including pork crackling, edamame beans, oepsies (Beer glazed bacon on a stick) and bitterballen. Beerhouse classics such as curry wurst, ribs, burgers and flammkuchen are crowd pleasers with quality and value for money being our kitchen’s driving philosophy. A strong food and beer pairing seam runs throughout the menu with beer pairing icons on each menu and a dedicated food and beer matching section. Look out for our popular daily lunch specials for R50 that includes a beer, soft drink or cider.

The Entertainment

Beerhouse offers a comprehensive array of entertainment including, pub quizzes, silent discos, comedy nights, live music, weekend DJ’s, free beer tastings at our Beer School, #FreeBeerFriday  and our flagship event Meet The Brewers food and beer pairing evenings. The entertainment offering is inclusive and curated for all tastes and desires. A varied sport offering with multiple screens including a projected  big screen makes Beerhouse a buzz of excitement on sporting days especially those where South Africa take on their rivals on the international stage.

The Décor.

Beerhouse is a contemporary beer hall that takes the great central European countries traditional beer halls social atmosphere and combines it with modern décor with quirky beery flair which makes Beerhouse comfortable, accessible and inclusive. Inspired by the trademark colour of the beverage which we serve to exalt; the golden yellow can be seen throughout the restaurant and bar and serves as a large influence in the identity of the brand. Beerhouse Centurion will be crowd funding a beer bottle light installation in collaboration with Belgian beer brand Vedett and our new customers. We will sell Vedett beer at cost price and every bottle will be collected clean and up-cycled and arranged into a spectacular light feature.

Revolutionary Facts

Beer represents 77.8% of total liquor volumes in South Africa, with a volume increase of 45 million litres and a total value increase of R3,89 billion in the 2015  alone. The Super-premium (‘Craft’) beer market is in the early development stage but Standard Bank estimates it grew 30% in 2015, 35% this year and could make up as much as 18 million litres by 2017. This would give it a 2.1% market share – from just 0.3% in 2011.

Why don’t you ask her if #shelovesbeer?

All good stories start with a beer (alright I will be honest – a few beers) and so one cosy winter night, beer in hand, I was scrolling through my Facebook news feed and came across the ‘Brewed with Love’ Campaign, this campaign struck me as unfair. Besides the fact that carrying a child is a lot harder than sipping on your favourite brew, it was the fact that men have this authentic point of reference when it comes to enjoying beer while advertising portrays women half naked, sultrily gazing at the camera in some awkward pose. You only need do a quick google search to find the extent that women are objectified when it comes to advertising beer.

So initially my light bulb moment was to create some kind of meme which authentically portrays Teaser 1women in beer. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised that actually there is much more that can be done. The South African beer industry already has some strong women who are playing on equal terms to the men and I wanted to engage them in this campaign to get their views and experiences. And so the #shelovesbeer campaign was born. This campaign will launch on the 9th August 2016 in line with National Women’s Day, to recognise the women who are leading the Beer Revolution and to inspire many more to join us!

What started with a Facebook Group (called #shelovesbeer) of 10 women has now grown to 89 vivacious, smart, beer loving ladies with the aim to create dialogue that celebrates women in beer and to give them a way to engage with beer in a positive and uplifting way. It is also aimed at providing the opportunity to connect, share, learn, inspire and educate.

We really do have some amazing women to celebrate. Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela a lady of many firsts including the first black South African person to be certified as a beer judge through the Beer Judging Certification Programme (BJCP) and the first black female shareholder in a microbrewery in South Africa.

Frieda Dehrmann, Consumer Science and Sensory Manager at SABMiller, Frieda was awarded SABMiller’s Global Taster of the Year 2012 an event that drew 1600 participants from six international regions served by SABMiller.

Meghan McCulloch (Jack Black Brewing Company) and Phillipa Wood (Darling Brew) both pioneers of craft beer in South Africa, starting their brands with their hubbys back in 2007, both beautiful breweries and tasting rooms have opened their doors in the last 12 months.

And of course Lucy Corne craft beer blogger, author, BJCP judge and president of the SouthYeasters Homebrew Club in the Western Cape.

TeaserAt first we exchanged stories about the challenges we had faced as women who enjoy a brew and are in the beer industry and it was clear that our experiences were all very similar: being offered beer alternatives or fruit beers instead of being asked our preferences; not being taken seriously in our opinions, tastes and advice or people suggesting that you “tart up” your female servers to punt more beers to Joe public. Don’t get me wrong, we are all supported by our male industry counterparts but the reality is that most people already underestimate a woman’s knowledge and understanding before we even open our mouths.

With that part neatly tucked out of the way, we couldn’t have this group turn into a moan fest. We started talking about strategies to deal with this….the main theme that came out was just keep on doing what you are doing gals, surprise them with your equal (if not better 😉 ) skills, expertise, attitude and discerning taste in beer!

The group has now collaborated on the #shelovesbeer campaign, which will showcase the smart and sassy beer lovers across South Africa, with the hope that we can create a platform to connect with more beer souls to explore their passion.

So what’s actually happening on Women’s Day? Well we have already had two brew days. In Cape Town, Lucy Corne and BeerLab’s Lynnae Endersby brewed the dark and hoppy  ‘Orange is the New Black IPA’ while in Johannesburg,  Amber x Brown Ale ‘African Queen on Vic Secret’ was brewed by Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela & Michelle Erasmus. The ladies’ brews will be available at Beerhouse on Long (Orange is the New Black) and Beerhouse Fourways (African Queen on Vic Secret) on the 9th August.

We have also had two photo shoots with the girls from the #shelovesbeer group for the campaign and used it as an opportunity for an informal networking session to have a laugh and talk about beer. I would like to extend a special thanks to the girls on the ground making things happen (have look at Janine & Precious’ Blog)!

On the 9th August we will go live with a social media campaign via Beerhouse social media using the #shelovesbeer. SABMiller are running a parallel campaign to celebrate their wonderful women in beer and Beerhouse will have an in store promotion with both beers brewed specifically for the day being on tap for free! So come along to have a taste and meet some of the girls!

#shelovesbeer doesn’t end on National Women’s Day, this is a community for women to talk about something they love, exchange ideas, create meetups and share skills. There is a wonderful world of beer waiting for you!

Beerhouse Fourways Roof Wetting.

First ever Beerhouse Fourways Pints

First ever Beerhouse Fourways Pints

On Thursday 15th May we had a Roof Wetting Party for Beerhouse Fourways. We had a party on site before we start construction on the new Beerhouse. Influential Jozi beer people, media, suppliers, builders,  potential investors, new neighbours, friends and family made up a jolly group of beer lovers. Traditionally a roof wetting function or ritual involves wetting of the actual roof. This is done to check that the new roof is properly sealed off from the elements. At our roof wetting we did more of an internal wetting and stress test to the liver, as the building is already built and we just wanted to celebrate once before we begin the re-building and shopfitting of our premises.

Beer suppliers and Breweries were very forthcoming with donations of delicious beer. A short presentation on the Beerhouse concept and what we aim to achieve was followed by a beautifully cooked lamb spit roast. Our guest really took our Beerhouse building site and there is a lot of enthusiasm towards us setting up a house full of beer in Jozi.

A big thank you to the following for supplying beer for the event – Craft Liquor MerchantsThe Tap RoomBavariaDrayman’s BreweryLoxton LagerBrewhogs and Urthel

Sadly we have to close the doors again after the party and get our overalls on and load up with some elbow grease and get stuck into transforming the site into a beautiful experience of the senses. We cant wait to open and share our love for beer with everyone in the place of gold.

Until then Stay Thirsty/ Stay Curious.

Find a venue for Beerhouse Johannesburg and win #99bottles

clarens-beer-festivalWe got a busy weekend ahead. Many craft beers to taste and many locations to visit for the first Beerhouse in Johannesburg. We need your help finding the right location and offer a bounty of all our #99bottles of beer for those that do.

We admit that it is very demanding being a part of the Beerhouse Team, one task we particularly dislike is travelling to beer festivals to sample different and interesting beers and to meet the skilled brewers that make them. But hey, someone’s got to do it!

Friday and Saturday (February 21st-22nd) our Head Dreamer Randolf and Beer Whisperer Murray will be making their way up to the Clarens Beer Festival to complete this arduous task, knowing that they are doing it for the greater good of beer… It seems that there will be up to 17 of the countries top micro-brewers on show and the boys intend to test each one a couple of times at least 🙂

I will be joining them on part of this epic journey up over the pretty mountains through to the Free State and eventually into Gauteng with the sole mission of finding a venue for our expansion into Johannesburg.

This is how we found the venue for the Beerhouse on Long Street. Send us your suggestions for locations for the first Beerhouse in Johannesburg!

We ask that you, our dear Beer Lovers, help us to find the newest addition to the Beerhouse family!

We are eagerly waiting for your recommendations and particularly your introductions to friends or family who either work in hospitality or are property developers/landlords looking for the most awesome tenant or future employer.

Or if you have the perfect spot close to your work or even down the road from your house, then email us the details and/or a picture of the empty space with possible landlords details, if they are advertised somewhere 🙂

For the recommendation that gets us the deal we will be giving away a voucher good for all 99 bottles of beer we stock at each Beerhouse!

So please do get in touch, the team will be available for meetings all day the 24th and 25th February….

Stay thirsty, stay curious!
