Beerhouse, the brand that has been championing the craft beer revolution in South Africa for the last few years, is now extending its beverage offering by partnering with everyone’s favorite SA rapper, Jack Parow. Through this venture, Beerhouse will be adding craft brandy to their ‘99 bottles of beer and 25 on tap’.
Parow recently launched his very own craft ‘karate-water’ brand, Parow Brandy, after sampling the golden nectar for years. He used the wisdom gained from his brandy experiences to create an authentic brandy for the people. And it is this very Parow Brandy that can now be enjoyed at all Beerhouse branches nationwide.
Always on the forefront of innovation, Beerhouse also introduced a new food movement last year with its #BrewFood revolution – teaming up with Ultimate Braai Master winner and Laat Die Potte Prut presenter, Piet Marais (and his team), to present an exploration that brought a fusion of food and beer together. Yes, indeed food and even dessert made with beer as an ingredient.
Says Randolf Jorberg, co-owner (and ‘head dreamer’) of Beerhouse: “Apart from beer, the Beerhouse team is completely aware of South Africans’ love of ‘klippies and coke’, or ‘karate-water’ as it is colloquially known. With our fingers on the pulse at all times, we absolutely love to surprise Beerhouse fans with something new and fresh. So a natural progression for us was to introduce craft brandy to our craft beer collection, and who better than the man himself, Jack Parow, to be part of this adventure with his Parow Brandy. We naturally have some other new craft surprises up our sleeves, so watch this space, but enjoy this craft brandy addition in the meantime.”
Beerhouse launched the introduction of the Parow Brandy to their collection with a Karate Water Tour featuring Jack Parow. This will be followed by an additional Jack Parow concert at Beerhouse Long Street (Cape Town) on the 26th of May.
Over and above, Beerhouse will be offering the very first ‘craft brandy’ special in the country – the Parow Brandy special at a mere R65 for two doubles plus a 330ml coke. Those attending the Karate Water Tour will be able to enjoy this special for free upon entry (one drink per ticket) – in effect taking R65 off the ticket price.
Parow comments about his newly launched craft brandy: “When I was a lightie, I never could have imagined that anyone would even like my tunes, let alone me having my very own brannewyn! Now we can all finally drink a real brandy, not like these other brandy labels who told me they can’t work with me as their target market is a higher LSM than my fans…basically saying my fans are not fancy or rich enough to drink their brandy – yet my fans are the people who drink the most of their freakin ‘fancy’ brandy. So now I have a brandy for everyone; whether you live in a shack or a mansion; drive an Escort or a Porsche. It’s REAL brandy for REAL people and it tastes better than any other brandy out there – I promise you that!”

A little bit about the legendary Jack Parow
Jack Parow – Zander Tyler was born in Parow, Cape Town in 1982. Today he is known as Jack Parow, the dangerous romantic Afrikaans rapper. Contrary to popular belief, his wild-fire success did not happen overnight. Jack started out rapping with crews from the Cape Flats and was rapping for many years before Cooler as Ekke catapulted him into success.
He studied to be a mechanic, but had to take jobs like packing fish in Cape Town harbour and allocating graves for the Cemetery Division of the Cape Town municipality to support his rap habit. Performing only for a beer and pizza soon changed, when his collaboration with Die Heuwels Fantasties on the track, Die Vraagstuk, put him in the limelight.
Jack Parow released his debut self-titled full length album in 2010. It struck gold within two weeks of its release and went platinum within a year. His music video for the hit Cooler as Ekke reached over 3.5 million views on YouTube.
Since his debut release he has headlined at major festivals in South Africa. Parow has performed in Russia, tours Europe almost annually and has played before packed out shows there. Performance highlights include opening for rap legends Eminem and Snoop Lion.
The Beer Revolution is growing and Beerhouse is expanding to Centurion. Beer represents 77.8% of total liquor volumes in South Africa, with a volume increase of 45 million litres and a total value increase of R3,89 billion in the 2015 alone. The Super-premium (‘Craft’) beer market is in the early development stage but Standard Bank estimates it grew 30% in 2015, 35% this year and could make up as much as 18 million litres by 2017. This would give it a 2.1% market share – from just 0.3% in 2011.

We are thrilled to let you know that today was Joe’s daughter’s first day at school! She attends the L’école Française du Cap, Cape Town French School. She was awarded a full scholarship that covers her tuition at the private school from Pre-school to Matric (Baccalaureate) and is an effort led by the French School teachers and Beerhouse owner Randolf Jorberg.
Since Joe’s tragic death on the 20th of June 2015, the outpouring of support from the wider community of beer lovers and brewers has been very humbling. Last year we reached our fundraising target of R60000 towards the Joe’s Legacy Fund.
The money raised was put in a fund for his daughter to access when she starts school. With your help this young girl will have every opportunity to reach her potential.

One year on, from a senseless tragedy that took the life of our Doorman and friend Joe Kanyona, a sensitive and caring soul, we remember him and look forward to contributing to creating and safeguarding his legacy.
Joe was killed while on duty, protecting us, as he always did. We are committed to looking after his legacy and exercise this commitment by supporting his only child; his beloved daughter who was only 4-months-old when her father passed away on the 20th of June, 2015.
Last year, Beerhouse hosted various fundraisers in Joe’s honour. The proceeds donated by Beerhouse and our generous customers, were used to support Joe’s family. In remembering Joe, we are delighted to announce that his daughter has recently been awarded a full scholarship by the L’école Française du Cap, Cape Town French School. This extraordinary donation covers her tuition at the private school from Pre-school to Matric (Baccalaureate) and is an effort led by the French School teachers and Beerhouse owner Randolf Jorberg.
“Due to her combined heritage of both Xhosa and Congolese parents, she is a perfect fit for the bursary; we have no doubt this bursary, funded by the French School, will give her the otherwise impossible opportunity to shine academically and realise her potential, so critically hampered by the tragic loss of her father”.
“We are convinced her social integration in the school would pose no problem at all as she would benefit from a support network capable of shouldering her tough academic commitments, and be able blend easily into the diverse, multicultural student body of the French School of Cape Town.” reads a statement from French School Board Committee.
Further, Beerhouse was instrumental in establishing the Long Street Association -soon after Joe’s death. Long Street Association is working hard to keep those who work and visit Long Street safe and employs up to 10 law enforcement officers and security patrols to enhance security on Long Street.
The trial of the three accused of murder and conspiracy to murder of Joe Kanyona will resume again on 22nd June after postponement.
This year, on the anniversary of Joe’s untimely death, Beerhouse will be hosting fundraising events for the week 20th June to 27th June 2016. All proceeds will go to assisting with Martha’s care.

On Monday the 20th: Beerhouse will donate all the day’s revenues without any deductions for stock or operating cost to the Joe’s Legacy Fund. We ask our patrons to drink our taps dry.
The ticket sales and proceeds of Meet the Brewers food and beer pairing event on the evening of the 20th will also go to this Fund. Tickets for this event are on sale for R175 at Quicket and include 6 oak aged beers from Innis & Gunn (Scotland) paired with 6 canapés from the Beerhouse kitchen.
The rest of the week, (20th June to 27th June), Beerhouse will offer a ‘Pint for a Purpose’ tap. They will tap beer sponsored by Drifter Brewing Company, Atlantic Storm Brewery, Jack Black, Zebonkey Brewery, Apollo Brewing Company, Cape Brewing Co., Belgian Beer Company SA,Dissident Brewing Company, Red Sky Brew, Devils Peak Brewing Company who have donated kegs of beer to the cause. Breweries, that want to donate their beers for this purpose are asked to contact Beerhouse as soon as possible. All proceeds from the sale of these beers will go towards Joe’s Legacy Project fund.

Dear Eleanor Robertson
Coming from a nation that’s big on beer myself, I’m always happy to get the thoughts of people from other cultures on a beverage so close to my heart. You’ll forgive me if I forgo anything you have to say about food though; I’m not at the point where I feel the need to kill, cook and eat giant rats just yet.
So, on to your feelings on beer, and craft beer in particular.
As I understand it, aside from price and aftertaste (and I refer you to the appropriate Latin proverb on that score) your two main gripes concerning craft beer extend to disliking the snobbery of beer nerds, and feeling that beer is simply a backdrop to a good pub session and should be treated as such. Beer should never take centre stage – that would be un-Australian. It simply doesn’t fit with what you’re used to, and you don’t like that. “Give me cheap beer, or give me sobriety,” is your rallying cry to the Carlton draught-drinking, Collingwood-supporting hordes. Finally, if craft beer “were contained to its own small bars where [you] never drink, it’d just be another niche subculture, where it belongs.”
Stirring stuff indeed.
I must say though, I’ve heard that last bit before. The apartheid government said the same things to black people in my country back in the day. And you Australians echo the sentiment: people can be as Aboriginal as they want, as long as they do it far away from most other Australians (that said, you’re quite happy to accept living with a hell of a lot of Asian people; apparently China says “Jump!” and Australia dons its kangaroo ears and screams “How high?”).
Because that’s what your opinion amounts to: I don’t like it because it’s not what I’m used to, therefore it must go away. Of course, you’re welcome to that opinion, and I’ll support your right to hold it. I do ask this, however: If you insist on being the harbinger of the craft beer apocalypse, at least realise that your thinking establishes and relies upon a divisive false dichotomy. It’s traditional Australian beer culture or nothing; it’s ‘normal’ beer or craft; it’s us or them; it’s the Coalition of the Willing or The Axis of Evil.
But…sometimes, I can savour a craft ale. And sometimes, I can drink cold, refreshing, mass-produced lager with a big smile on my face. Wow, did I just say that? Is it possible that beer (and life) isn’t so black and white, so cut and dried?
Yes, Eleanor Robertson, it is. And I’d like you to come to Beerhouse and discover this incredible middle ground. I’ll even serve you myself. You’re welcome, because you like beer.
And before I finish, let me address that pressing threat to decent pub conversations everywhere: the Beer Nerd. Or at least I could, but you’re the one using phrases like ‘demanding in flavour’ and ‘overly hoppy’. Perhaps you should let that struggling inner Beer Nerd free. Let her express herself a bit more. Then you could be a force for universal beer love and unity, rather than a writer of patently ridiculous and sadly segregationist polemics.

No 3 Fransen Street: now available on tap at Beerhouse Fourways!
It was bound to happen. The mighty SAB is wading into the broad category of “craft beer” and going to be making ales at their No3 Fransen Street Brewery (which was previously used as a test brewery for their very talented brewers to experiment with other styles), and embracing the opportunity to make a variety of beers. There is a market for it, even if it’s tiny compared to that of good old fashioned lager. In light of their lager sales, SAB didn’t really have to get involved in making ales; but they are, and the SA beer scene will be better for it. The more the merrier after all (especially if everyone’s drinking beer). Three types of Weiss are in the pipeline – Krystal, Dunkel and Honey, along with a Cream Ale, Irish Red Ale and an IPA. Add to that three dark beers including a Porter and you have a large, interesting variety of ales that will help grow the beer category in SA immensely.
By describing their beers as speciality, SAB cleverly circumnavigate the murky waters of “craft”. In their own words, “Each batch is brewed to create tastes that are unique, individual and completely lacking in ordinariness”. Not sure what this says about their core range of lagers, but a lack of ordinariness is always a good thing.
SAB is also eager to create a craft image for their brewery. “In a typical suburb, on a regular street, lies no ordinary brewery. A small batch brewery dating back to 1998, a brewery that was designed with speciality beer in mind, way ahead of its time.” Well not entirely true – Lex Mitchell and crew were brewing up English “speciality brews” since 1982. Yes that’s right – lagers come from supersonic brewery cities that churn out millions of hectolitres while ale is made in small batches in a leafy suburb. Well isn’t that romantic! Such notions have captivated South Africa, and thanks to the Beer Spring we have a lot more beer lovers today than we’ve ever had, with a massive variety of styles to choose from.
It’s worth noting that SAB’s No3 Fransen Street isn’t under-cutting other micro-breweries (as I’m sure they could) with their indomitable economies of scale. They politely suggest the beer be sold at R40. Taking into mind how much it costs to buy in, it is decently positioned. Remember you can get micro-brewed pints of beer at Beerhouse from R25 to R60 so they fit comfortably in the middle. This proves the naysayers wrong – brewers and outlets really don’t rip beer lovers off, ok most don’t there is always bad apples. Good beer isn’t cheap to make and like everything in life quality must come at some cost.
“Craft beer” is a highly subjective phrase, and has caused quite a stir in the last few years in South Africa. For one thing, the word craft is emotive; for another, where exactly does one stop when it comes to classifying it? Must a true craft brewery cultivate its own hops and barley, malt the barley, mill it all, and use cultivated yeast and naturally carbonate? Not many breweries can claim to do this in SA, if any. The words macro and micro are more suited to describing beers’ origins. Using “commercial” to describe macro breweries is nonsense. They’re all commercial. Only those home brewers who share a pint amongst friends with no exchange of money are non-commercial.
Moreover, the word “craft” is often confused with variety. The great variety available to us in SA at the moment is due to the revived interest in ale. Lagers and more specifically SAB lagers have dominated the SA beer landscape for over a century. SAB are a very successful business and for good reason. They make refreshing, cold, “hot country” lagers and they are consistent. Recently people have tried to manufacture a false dichotomy: if you drink “craft” then you don’t drink SAB. In fact, to prove that you are a “craft” beer lover, it’s required that you say nasty things about SAB and pull a face like you’ve just smelt a 30 day-old sandwich in your forgotten lunch box. Just because you drink “craft” beer does not mean you have been ordained with a higher purpose and set on a path of beer evangelism to rescue the non- believer Castle Lite drinkers. Each to their own – let them drink what they enjoy and don’t let it offend you! It’s for the individual to explore the wonderful variety in beer and settle on what suits them.
